Ok, so you’ve probably seen this in the news or on the web. And of course when you sign a listing agreement or buyer agency agreement, you’ll see a warning about wire fraud in a box outlined in red. Over and over again we hear those involved in a real estate transaction say we get it and it won’t happen to me. There is even a warning in the NC Offer to Purchase and Contract. There are warnings about wire fraud at the bottom of all attorney emails and most real estate agent emails, The video below is a recent account of what happened to a local buyer, she’s was scammed out of $95,000. It was wired somewhere, but not to the closing attorney. I will disagree with one thing said in the video, Attorneys WILL send you wiring instructions via an encrypted email. Never forward that email. Print the wiring instructions AND call the attorney to verify the instructions are correct. Make sure you are calling is a phone number that is verified and known to be correct. These extra 5 minutes of your time can save you $95,000 or more!
